Nevada Public Education Foundation attended the second annual special, non-partisan, nationwide event, sponsored by the Every Child Matters Education Fund (ECMEF) and co-sponsored by many other national, state, and local organizations (such as VOICES, Prevent Child Abuse America, the Afterschool Alliance, the National Association of Social Workers, as well as NPEF). It brought thousands of people together during the week of October 4-10, to show widespread public support for a shift in spending priorities towards children and families. It called upon the Administration, Congress, State Legislatures, Governors, Mayors, and local officials to make our nation’s children a top priority. Events took place on the steps of the state capitols and other appropriate venues as well as in Washington, DC. Nevada Public Education Foundation Testifies at Congressional Hearing
Recently Nevada Public Education Foundation at the request of the U.S. House of Representatives’ Committee on Education and Labor testified before the Subcommittee on Higher Education, Lifelong Learning, and Competitiveness at the field hearing entitled “New Innovations and Best Practices under the Workforce Investment Act.”Chanda Cook, NPEF’s Director of Community Initiatives and expert for policy and systems collaboration, gave testimony and provided recommendations for congressional action in reauthorizing the youth portion of the Workforce Investment Act. Ms. Cook and NPEF have been active with the workforce investment system locally and statewide, in the role as an intermediary organization working to align three systems—education, workforce, and youth development—for youth success. The collaborative thinking of the workforce system in Nevada has enabled tremendous opportunities that are truly making a difference for our young people. NPEF Testimony
The Ready for Life Nevada Dropout Prevention Summit was held in November 2008 to work toward increasing the graduation rate. We recently received the evaluation report from America's Promise Alliance which summarizes the findings from the community readiness assessments and the attendee post summit surveys.
